From the Mesoamerican Ball Game to "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," athletic competition has been a key component of nearly every human society. But many speculative and fantastic stories exclude sports from their visions of humanity, and many fictional sports don't make sense (as either a game or a social function). How can sportsball-disinclined SFF writers effectively include realistic sports--or make their fantastic sports feel real? How can worldbuilding be revealed (or informed) by characters watching and playing games?
